Coaching and Practice

Many players have a tendency to hit 30 balls with a 7 iron followed by 30 balls with a driver but how often in a round would you do that?

This style of practice known as block training is rather one dimensional. If you would like to improve your on course performance, vary the shots you play on the range.

Next time you visit the range try this practice game:

Starting with your sand iron hit each club in the bag. The challenge is to hit the club further than the club before (for example an 8 iron further than a 9 and so on..)

However if you fall short on a shot start again with a sand iron.

This is a tough drill and a test of consistant ball striking. If you trip up with a certain club hit some extra practice shots with that club and repeat the drill.

Players often find it tough to hit a 4 iron longer than a 5 iron so in this situation it may be worth trying a hybrid club: The innovative design makes it easier to hit and will help you achieve good distance through your set.

No more 3 putts!

Stats show that the most frequent cause of a 3 putt is poor judgement of length rather than choosing a poor line. This is often caused by variable contact on the ball.

Experiment:

Set up to putt with the ball in the centre of the face. Then place a 2nd ball on the toe of the putter. Go ahead and hit a putt of about 15 feet. You will notice how the 2 balls travel different distances. This illustrates how the contact point on the face influences the distance the ball travels

Drill:

Using 2 tee pegs create a gateway just wider than the putter head. Place a ball just in between the pegs and hit a putt.

Continue the drill aiming to increase the length of putt without hitting the gate

You will feel a consistant contact that creates great distance control

So to eliminate those annoying 3 putts Hit it Solid!

Drive for Show Putt for Dough!!
